For the question:
usually i try to think of refs and brightness for the character I'm gonna make, for example Minute is dark/cold-toned and my kenadian as warm-toned! Always go for their main color or tone, it'll look great! Its more fun to experiment or have fun with colors. Another thing sometimes I use yoksel.github.io/svg-gradient-map/ for tint! It helps, it would usually look good if you make the colors with the right shades
Its also helpful to look at references like art, style, and etc ^_^
